Just received an email advising that from 1 November, NZ Aviation News will be part of National Business Review and no longer published as a separate entity. I am also advised that my subscription will be transferred to a premium NBR subscription, valued at $35 per month. Aviation items will be published as they happen, apparently more timely. Having a quick look at NBR subscription rates - $399/year - Corporate; $35/month - Premium Business; or $14.95/month Smartphone only. That's a considerable jump from the Aviation News rates. I'm not sure aviation enthusiasts will be willing to pay those rates for what seems to be a much reduced production, and have to wade through all the business stuff to find aviation news.
So another quality publication gone.

Dare I say it - A sign of the times.
Two decades ago my local Cronulla Sydney, newsagent carried 29 aviation titles, when i checked there earlier this year they stocked nine.

I think that the aviation enthusiast following for Aviation News will decline once there is no longer a print copy production. Many of us "oldies" prefer to read a printed copy in that format, rather than trying to see it on a screen or going through the process of printing off a .pdf (presuming that is an option). This coupled with the requirement to subscribe to the NBR at a high annual cost will unfortunately see a reduction in coverage to the masses. Such is the world of progress we live in!

I think I just about qualify as a member of the 'digital generation' but I've always preferred physical publications when it comes to aviation. The reality is if I just wanted the 'news' part of it, there are a million other places I can and do get it from online, for free. I usually skim read that part of it, the real attraction for me has always been the other articles; historical, biographical content etc. I guess that will still continue in the digital format but I don't see myself subscribing to NBR when my current Aviation News subscription runs out just to get that, sadly. I can sympathise with them though, it must be incredibly difficult to run a print publication on a reasonably specialist topic in this day and age.

I'm a bit older than Leo but also one of the digital generation, but I'd not dream of getting a paid e-sub to an aviation magazine. Having hard copies to refer to - and reread - is much more satisfying. when i checked there earlier this year they stocked nine. Lucky for some - my local Paper Plus carries two, maybe three on a good day! And now one's dead!

While I'm one of the "old" generation and generally prefer to have a hard copy to read (and re-read), with Aviation News I went to a digital subscription as I had problems trying to find in shops - even in Hamilton! Also, I've been trying to downsize my magazine collection, so did not want to add to the pile. Air force news - waiting for a chance to deliver these to a forumite in Wellington, NZ Wings (1972 2008) next in the decision pile. Have already scanned many newspaper cuttings, magazine articles to digital files.

I'm with you guys regarding re-reading articles, looking at the pics! I have every issue of Classic Wings and I regard it as 'historical documents' now. And you can't beat the tactile feedback of the codex format

That is sad, John's magazine was always looked forward to as its range of topics got me out of my particular aviation rut. Also there is now one less outlet for our aviation writers on subjects big and small , current and historical so this forum becomes even more important. Dave perhaps there is space now for a magazine section linked to the forum and add to your editorial duties.

Aviation News was also one of the very few that actually paid authors for writing their articles, rather than expecting them to contribute for free.

So true Peter and that fact is reflected in the quality of its content. I suspect the lack of contributor remuneration led to the downfall, some years back, of our longest serving aviation publication.

What hasn't been said is who will be the editor of the "digital" Aviation News. Will John continue in his excellent work, or will the editorship be passed over to one of the NBR journos, with layout etc being carried out by their team

As i have said elsewhere, I have been a continuous subscriber since the forerunner "Snoopy's Rag" in the 1970's. However, I will not be taking up the NBR offer/version. Charity begins at home!

Jungle drums work! I emailed Donna at Aviation News re the changes and the proposed pricing changes. Donna replied, confirming my subscription details, and advising me that it appears that due to the amount of feedback from Aviation News subscribers, they will be offering a much cheaper rate for Aviation News only. Subscribers will be advised shortly, once the detail is worked out. Good news for all.

While John stays with AV NEWS, and email from Donna tells me that the rest of the team are to become unemployed. A great pity as they worked very well together and the three times that I stood in for John when he was away on his European holidays it was a pleasure to work in that office.
