Stumbled upon this, via a comment on Wiki. I was totally unaware that there was film of the crash. Now added to my NASA folder to sit alongside Bruce Peterson M2F2 crash and the Scott Crossfields X-15 bounce.
That man must of had a huge pair.

Wow, that must have been very hard on the body sustaining that for so long. Looks like he deployed the drogue chute at one point?
Amazing footage, a pity the film seems to have damage.

Here is how this accident was portrayed in the 1983 film The Right Stuff.

I'm amazed this footage exists! Having seen the movie so many times it's amazing to see - through the unfortunate film damage - how it really happened.

I have to give huge kudos to the camera operator. Filming a spec in the sky falling from 104,000 feet is phemoninal. The lens on that camera must have been quite something too.

Chuck talks about that incident in this interview with Dave Letterman too. Great interview.

There is an audio recording of Yeager's communications as his aircraft fell. Apparently all test pilots that pass through Edwards AFB have to listen to it as Yeager kept doing his job and communicating all of the actions that he was trying to take and the effect (or lack of) that these had to the aircraft. It is an amazing insight into the skills of the man I understand.

I don't think so, I spent a bit of time at Edwards in 03/04 and was told about it several times but very few had actually heard it.
