Looking at where the development is intended and its significant 'encroachment' on the extended center line of Ardmore's main runway, it's surprising there hasn't been more debate/opposition from the Airfield management or Papakura local body, although with non-notifiable resource consents, often the first anyone knows (NIMBY's usually follow) is when the earth-movers come in to start developing the subdivision...! The issue and some debate was recently posted up on the NZ Warbirds FB page here - www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=4805719479440749&id=150073775005366

It is so blatantly obvious the developers tried to sneak this under the table. This same developer has also tried to do the same in Wanaka and Alexandra, also close to the airports. Their environmental foresight is commendable, but they also appear to be targeting land adjacent to airports. Be on alert in your local airport area, they are trying everywhere.

Perhaps Ardmore might have to upgrade and reinstate the other sealed runway 07/25 (now a taxiway) to avoid the eventual neighbourly complaints from aircraft taking off and landing..?

Speaking of Ardmore Airport development, work had started a few weeks ago on the site on the western side of the southern end of Corsair Lane.

Out of interest: why was 07/25 closed? I understand (if my memory serves me right) that is was a financial decision as the cost of trying to maintain two active sealed runways was becoming prohibitive, and the flight traffic could be managed using just the one vector. Others may be able to offer better insight?

You are correct McFly - too expensive to maintain both runways. It is still in use as a taxiway and there have been occasional one-off landings but it would need a lot of work to return it to an active runway. Also the circuit comes fairly close to Auckland's control zone and potentially conflicts with helicopter operations. The other development, which is going ahead now and the article posted above regarding the trees refers to, is apparently for commercial properties not housing.

The runways at Ardmore are on swamp ground and were never intended to be there forever. Even after it was laid for less then a year they started to get major issues with it due to subsidence. It had to be closed and the Corsairs, etc, moved to Whenuapai for a period while repairs were done.

Driving on the roads around the airfield even today can be a bit adventurous at times - every time it rains another pothole opens up, and then in summer the ground contracts and puts undulations in the surface. Not a great place for a housing development regardless of the airfield being there really!

Yes that is a good point. Although these days they seem to build houses anywhere if they can make a buck.

Providing the piles go deep enough, you can build almost anywhere.
