Latest video out of Precision Airmotive in Wangaratta shows Doug Hamilton taxying the unpainted machine. Looking very nice despite its primer coat of many colours. Original aircraft and survivor of Milne Bay, this P.40 scored the first ever aerial victory for No.76 Sqn over Milne Bay. Very much looking forward to seeing this very historic machine fly.

this P.40 scored the first ever aerial victory for No.76 Sqn over Milne Bay. I didn't realise that Ando, that's amazing! For those who don't do Facebook, here's the first engine run on 12 November: More engine runs and first taxi, 30 November: And another with a guest star:

A huge amount of research has been undertaken to ensure that the marking scheme and the actual colours on the machine are correct. It is unbelievable that this scheme - as delivered from the factory, is the root cause of the most controversial arguments in the world of paint schemes. The US manufacturers version of the RAF Temperate Land Scheme as applied not only to the P-40 but also to the Boston, Vultee Vengeance, Mustang I, P-38 and also P-39 has resulted in literally hundreds of articles, books etc over the years. Still to be approved by the RAAF and incorporating colour samples hand mixed in the UK but hopefully shall not receive the international criticism levelled at the colours of the Australian War Memorial P-40....which is also a Milne Bay veteran.

Indeed, I am looking forward to seeing the result of the research that has gone into this scheme Ando.

The same scheme is applicable to a number of RNZAF potential restorations.....can you believe that the scheme as applied to the aircraft were absolutely identical ?? Applied to the machines with rubber templates to ensure total uniformity across RAF, RAAF, RNZAF and also USAAF machines....even under the wing fairings !

johnnyfalcon, I have pics taken in the factory paint shop with the templates on the wings and wings being sprayed. Guessing the same for the fuselages and tailfeathers. I was amazed when I saw the pic and more amazed regarding the controversy about the colours of the upper and lower surfaces. Hoping that the research is 'approved' for the paint scheme. Been waiting for months now

This is all fascinating to hear, Ando. I'm even more interested in this project now!

Hope we see an RNZAF marked P40 one day soon, be great to see one with those angular stripes up the wings?

There will be one flying in New Zealand within the next couple of years in its genuine RNZAF colours, NZ3147, but it won't have the wing stripes because it is a P-40N-1, and only one N-1 is known to have received those stripes, and that could well have been from a wing change, bit it was not NZ3147.

Does anyone know the RAAF serial for this P40?

Does anyone know the RAAF serial for this P40? The inclusion of "A29-90" in the thread title makes me think it's A29-90

I’m very sorry to hear that. I’m sure they have their reasons.
