Whangamatā plane incident a false alarm - police

Police say reports of a small plane getting into difficulty in the Waikato town of Whangamatā were a false alarm after initial reports suggested it had crashed.
Emergency services raced to the scene after receiving reports that the "small aircraft" had experienced some "difficulty" at around 10:20am on Thursday, a police spokesperson told Newshub.
A motorist told the New Zealand Herald they saw an aircraft flying low and erratically through the hills, followed by a cloud of smoke.
Later on Friday afternoon, police confirmed the incident was a false alarm.
"A topdressing plane expelling fertiliser was mistaken for smoke," a spokesperson said.
