Two people escaped a gyrocopter crash at a Feilding airport with no injuries, thanks to the efforts of a pilot.
A police media spokeswoman said a gyrocopter had crash-landed and caught on fire at the Feilding Aerodrome, 9km outside of Palmerston North, at 2.35pm on Friday.
Carlos Dempsey, Fire and Emergency spokesman, said the local crew were called out at the same time, and it took 10 minutes to extinguish the flames.
The two people avoided the fire by seconds. A pilot from the Feilding Aviation Flight School, who witnessed the crash and asked to not be named, said he landed only 10 seconds before the gyrocopter that crashed.

“He stopped for us to clear the runway. Then I saw him land, then he flipped over and smoke started coming out.”
The pilot told his student to call emergency services while he ran the 100-metre stretch with a fire extinguisher.
One person was able to get out on their own, but the second person was in shock.
“I helped them out, then 10 seconds later the fire spread.”

He said the weather conditions had been great for flying, and they did not yet know why the gyrocopter flipped.
Feilding Aerodrome president Bruce Brownlie said the rescuing pilot did a “bloody good job”.
“It was a pretty amazing effort from the local pilot to get them out.”
