I've built the simple but visually appealing 72nd AVI DH Puss moth kit. With a bit of research and a couple of paintings in the "Flying By Bradshaw" biography I was able to reproduce Southland Airways Puss Moth ZK-ACX My only complaint would be that the multi-piece cockpit glazing is prone to pipette effects and paint bleeds...It was a close call at one stage whether the model was going to be junked! Beautiful work Harry! I'm glad you persevered as she's come out a real gem! I've often seen AVI kits listed online and been curious about how they build. By the way my bench is always open to kits deemed unbuildable by others, so bear me in mind should such an issue arise again

Harry, Is the colour scheme taken from a photograph of that aircraft, or is it a bit more speculative and from other Southland Airways Puss Moths? If I recall right, I think ACX was not used much or at all by that company, although it did own it for a period. That very aircraft (ACX) used to fly from a short airstrip from 1930 to 1934, only about 3 miles from where I was born (although latter event was in 1951, so I never saw it there!) However did see quite a lot of it at Christchurch International from 1964 onwards, although it never flew, was called -AJN by this time. Reason the original owner (Sir Bruce Stewart) had to give up flying in the mid-1930s was that he accidentally destroyed one of his own lower legs with a shot gun while out hunting (presume for rabbits). Later he purchased powerful motor boats, probably roomier than the tiny cabin of a Puss Moth.

Hi David, the paint scheme for ACX is based on about 3 period paintings that appear in the book "Flying by Bradshaw" painted by Denis Faithful (mostly undertaking joy rides at Riverton) including the image on the front cover. It would seem that the aircraft all wore all combinations of paint schemes, finishing up in red fuselage and silver flying surfaces prior to WW2 and the airline being wound up and aircraft sold to the RNZAF. Reading the book, it would appear that ACX was Bradshaw's favourite aircraft, followed by ABG and then ADU which appears not to have flown frequently and quickly reduced to spares (something about rotten timber etc).
Interesting & humorous story about ACX previous history!! Apparently ACX is on long-term rebuild at Manderville
Southland Airways also owned but never flew a Boeing Model 40 (ZK-ADY) which never saw service

Zac, AVI kits are good...something between AZ Model & Amodel kits in terms of quality. They appear to have been CAD designed, although the pieces are not necessarily going to fit first time. AVI's Foxmoth is probably as good quality as an Airfix tigermoth to build, however lots of butt joints and no locating pins
