I am preparing a short piece about Jimmy Gunn for publication in the Aviation Historical Society of New Zealand Journal and wondered if anyone here could help me out with a few photographs to accompany it. I have been in touch with Graham Claydon, author of the 488 Squadron history Gone the Dark Night but unfortunately he is now unable to locate the photos he used in his book.
In particular, I would like to have one of Jimmy himself (NZ402866 Flight Lieutenant James Athol Gunn). Jimmy was killed on air operations with 488 Squadron on 15 Sep 43;
his observer 130906 Flying Officer James Affleck, RAFVR (killed along with Jimmy on 15 Sep 43);
and NZ2335 Flight Lieutenant Terence Patrick Ryan, DFC, RNZAF. (His previous numbers with the RAFVR were 1323333 and 143429)

Earlier today Matthew sent me three other group photos of this type, but not this one itself which is perhaps the best I seen so far, so thanks for drawing it to my attention. Graham has since found a photo of Gunn and Affleck (with two others) in front of a Beaufighter but it is not a very sharply defined one. Cheers, Errol |

Ryan's daughter) may be able to help with a photo..? Have just found this site. I am a daughter of Terence Patrick Ryan who you have mentioned and I also remember Neil Knox and Frank Winn being friends of our family as I was growing up. My father passed away on 12 January 1972. I may be able to assist you on these 3 men as Dad did a lot of his flying as the Navigator with Frank Winn. Regards. Gail Laurence |
