Suppose there is no chance MOTAT will open earlier?

Way to rushed to do wigram, ashburton and timaru on the same day..... Thanks for the reply just what I wanted to hear, on the day I have planned to visit Ashburton they are only open 1pm to 3pm. My plan was to do Wigram 9.30am to around 12.00pm then duck down to Ashburton after they close down to the Richard Pearce memorial at Waitohi. So you think I am stretching things a little?

Suppose there is no chance MOTAT will open earlier? Talking to emron (volunteer) on Sunday, he thought it was late July, and was surprised to see a FB post on Friday claiming mid-July. So seems unlikely! Yes, Zero and Spit as fall back. Maybe also the RNZN Museum?

You may be better off planning Wigram and Ferrymead on one day, then Ashburton and the Pearce Memorial another day. You could also drop into Rangitata Island to see the Brodie Microlight museum on the way. If the schedules get tight, I'd suggest that the Pearse Memorial could be dropped. Its a long way from anything and is pretty unimpressive in the big picture of things.

My wife and I are driving to Queenstown from Christchurch later in our stay. From the sounds of what you are saying having a look at the Memorial for a photo stop could be incorporated into our drive south.

In Auckland you could see how receptive the Subritzkys are.

Hi planecrazy, is there a reason why you're doing three days at Omaka, or are you including travel time to the South Island? Don't forget to nip round to Woodbourne and look at the Argosy, and the Bristol Freighter outside the Marlborough Aero Club at Omaka. Whilst in the vicinity of Blenheim you could head to Dillon's Point Road and see a small monument to where the first Cook Strait crossing by air ended up landing, or go in the opposite direction past Renwick to see a memorial to RNZAF Base Delta on the corner of Waihopai Valley Road, if you're that way inclined. ZK-SAE Yes, on rushing yourself too much between Wigram and Ashburton. Ferrymead/RNZAFM in the same day is much better. You'll find you'll probably spend more time at the museums than you anticipated. Don't forget to go look at the art deco control tower at Wigram, beautiful building, and get out and photograph the gate guard Harvard. You could swing by the airport shopping mall and go photograph the Spitfire-on-a-stick. _DSC4022 Agree that the Pearse memorial isn't much to see. It's not that far off the main highway, the question is, how much is it worth to you to visit? If you can't fit it in I'd go with Peter's suggestion and pop in and see the Brodies at Rangitata after driving to Ashburton. Again though, you'll probably spend more time at Ashburton than you might think. DSC_4287 As for the Subritsky's great suggestion, but they are not at their old place anymore. The collection is squeezed in a shed at Dairy Flat airport and the entry's security gated now. I'm sure Don would like to have you, he's a great guy and you'll spend a long time chatting, so be prepared for a long day if you do drive out there. If you don't go to MoTaT 1, the main site because the aviation hangar is closed, the Auckland Museum is certainly an option, or you could get out your GPS and go on a hunt around the city for odds and ends - if you're driving, that is. The former TEAL hangar at Mt Wellington, the MiG-21 on the building at Penrose etc. As suggested you could go to the navy museum at Torpedo Bay and perhaps stop outside the entrance to the naval base at Devonport to photograph the Achilles turret and gun director. _DSC5124 While you're in Queenstown, if you have time you could drive to Wanaka and go to the Toy and Transport Museum - if it's open, that is.

That would be a great place to visit as well. I understand the Subritzky collection has been largely dispersed now... Some of it is still together in a hangar at Dairy Flat, the Vincent, Baffin, Oxford, two of the Hinds, the Proctor and Vampire are there, but as I mentioned, the airport is now security gated. If you know Don, get in touch in advance.

Want to have a really good look through the Omaka museum and will cheek out the above as well, may treat myself to a flight, we'll see?ZK-SAE Yes, on rushing yourself too much between Wigram and Ashburton. Thanks Nuuumannn, for all these great tips, I am sqeezing things a little which I always do if I'm honest. I spent the first 17 odd years of my life in Christchurch have to work around family and catching up with a few friends. My wife is also a bit of a plane nut but not to the same extreme as me, need to find the plane people balance. We finish up in Queenstown for ten days skiing with our adult kids and their partners, hoping for a down day to perhaps get to the Mandeville Moths or the Wanaka toy museum. Thank you to all who have been chiming in most grateful, will make my visit so much better

Another question folks, best photo spots at Ardmore, planning to be there on a Saturday, visit the Warbirds hangar and hopefully get some flying action, is there some more favourable spots around the runways that public can get to and is morning or afternoon more favourable?
Thanks so much......

Re the Subritzky's: the 'shed' is a hangar (that Don built originally, now owned by the Aero Club). And the Vampire is separately owned.

Thanks so much...... If the weather is good, Ardmore will generally be fairly busy all day. The eastern corner of Corsair Lane is a popular spot for photographers to sit. It has a good view of the runway, room to park, and you're not looking into the sun. 37°02'00.3"S 174°58'11.1"E on Google Maps.
