Two injured after small plane crash lands and catches fire on Hamilton farm20 Jun, 2022 04:37
Two people have been taken to Waikato Hospital after their plane crash landed, bounced over a fence then caught fire on a Hamilton farm.
Emergency services responded to the incident on Barrett Rd in Temple View at 2.43pm. A St John spokesperson said one person was in moderate condition and a second person had minor injuries.
Miel Meyer said the plane crash happened on his farm. He was in a meeting as he watched the plane come down to the ground. "They've done their best to put the plane down but it bounced over one fence and they just managed to lie it into one of the ditches."There is a small runway on the farm which the pilot had attempted to use, Meyer said. "They did make a good attempt at trying to land," he said. "The plane did catch on fire so there were some flames, but they've come out unscathed and no animals were hurt because there's a dairy farm here and it could've well been that the cows were in the paddock. It seems to be all OK."
One ambulance and one manager responded. www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/two-injured-after-small-plane-crash-lands-and-catches-fire-on-hamilton-farm/VLEEY3GGAS6OBXMWHBTSQTYUKI/

Report from a neighbour, an eyewitness.
I am wondering what a bad attempt would look like.
I don't read the Herald or Stuff so will wait until the aviation reporting.
Were they planning to land there ?

I'm glad to hear the occupants weren't seriously injured. Were they planning to land there ? There's only one person who can answer that.

The location is just to the west of the Collins Road airstrip, perhaps they were intending to land there but didn't quite make it? Thankfully they lived to tell the tale.

The president of the Waikato Aero Club has sent out an email to members outlining the salient points. I won't post the whole thing but the main bits are pretty much as you would expect (or have read).
1. It was a training flight with two onboard the C172R, registration ZK-WAM. 2. Engine issues caused a forced landing onto a farm paddock near Koromatua, west of Hamilton. 3. Aircraft ended up in a ditch and caught fire. 4. Both pilots exited the plane pretty much intact. Taken to hospital for checks, released later that day. 5. Investigation is ongoing as to what caused the engine issue.
That's about the size of it at this point in time. We will wait to see what other official information comes to light.

According to my logbook I have 128.2 hours in WAM and had my first solo in it shortly after WAC acquired it in 2004 so it holds some sentimental value for me. Other than a landing accident caused by pilot error at Raglan it's lived a pretty uneventful life. I'd love to see it fly again but the initial reports appear pretty grim.

I presume WAM isn't a diesel conversion?

I used WAM on Sunday for the final video fly-over of the new Hamilton Expressway. I've developed a way to to create footage that doesn't need a heli... or the expense of one (or hard-mounting certified paperwork) Feeling rather fortunate as I had it booked for Wednesday but a cheeky call to the charter pilot Sunday morning got the job completed on Sunday. Much relief with the only other C172 with 135 charter authorisation at Waikato Aviation was JPG and it's in the shop getting an engine rebuild.
