This week I supplied some info to a poster on the WIX forum who is on a mission regarding Allison V1710s and was asking for details from serial plates that people might have access to.
I uploaded a photo of the plate from the Allison we have at Ferrymead and he reverted with the detail that included it being factory fitted to the a/c that became 3098.
ADF serials yields the info that the a/c crashed due to engine failure on 8/8/44 at Ohakea. Presumably it was then reduced spares or simply written off for scrap.
We obtained the engine from Bill Patterson, originally of Dunedin, who had used it in a powerboat prior to it having a serious event which caused him to move onto another engine. However obviously the event that dealt to 3098 was not an unhappy event for the engine.
Just posting this for interests sake.

The engine may not have been fitted to NZ3098 when the aircraft crashed, of course. They did get swapped around in maintenance. You'd have to look at the accident report I guess to see if it was involved.

OK, looking at that, it does not look too bad, so maybe the Ferrymead engine was still fitted at that time.
I love the very weathered paintwork. It is one of the ex-Tonga P-40E's so by this time will have seen a lot of flying.
