The Evening Star printed an article on the 4th of October 1940 with statistics of how many men had volunteered for the Empire Air Forces. In the section on New Zealand the number is amazing, considering the primitive nature of our Air Force in that 1939-40 period. It reads: Even if by the word pilots they may have meant aircrew, it's still an impressive number, which of course kept on growing and growing over the next five years.
