“AVIATION WEEK”
EXHIBITION IN THE CITY.
NIGHT FLYING AND FIREWORKS.
----
The most elaborate aviation exhibition yet held in Auckland has been organised in connection with “aviation week,” to be observed next week. It will be opened officially on Monday by the Mayor of Auckland, Mr G. W. Hutchison, at the premises of the Farmer’s Trading Company, Limited, at 2.15 p.m.
“Aviation week” has been planned by the Auckland Aero Club to stimulate interest in the club and to promote air-mindedness among the public. The exhibition probably will prove a centre of interest, as one of the principal exhibits will be a Curtiss Pilot Machine, imported by the Vacuum Oil Company, Proprietary, Limited, for the occasion.
This machine is fitted with a seat resembling that of a real aeroplane, and has a joy-stick and rudder-bar which control the movements of a model aeroplane set in a large glass case in front of the pilot. It is stated that the machine will enable a novice to gain a good idea of flying methods in a very short time. The Aero Club has offered three prizes, including free instructions up to A licence standard, for the persons who perform best on the Curtiss machine.
The exhibition also will include a single-seater biplane, the Tui, built by Mr. F. A. North, of Onehunga. This machine, which is undoubtedly one of the prettiest aeroplanes in the Dominion, is now almost ready for its flying tests. It is powered by a three-cylinder radial Szekely engine.
Other features of the exhibition will be parachutes, air navigation instruments, engines and wireless equipment, supplied by the New Zealand Air Force.
A dance for club members and their friends will be held at the Peter Pan Cabaret on Wednesday evening, and on the following Saturday, the last day of “aviation week,” the staff of the Farmer’s Trading Company, Limited, will visit the aerodrome. Night flying will be carried out on Saturday by the instructor, Flight-Lieutenant D. M. Allan, in one of the club’s Moths, and this will be followed by a display of fireworks, and another dance.
