Today’s the final day! There’s been some great racing so far in several classes this morning and the results page is being regularly updated here: reports.airrace.org/2022/index.php

A few minutes ago an L-29 crashed on the course, away from spectators, during the Jet Class Gold race. I was watching live on YouTube - the cameras followed the aircraft the whole time, the announcers explained there had been an incident and emergency crews were on the way and then the livestream stopped and was made unavailable to the public.

I saw it too. Very crappy. I've seen a replay of the incident and I suspect there will be no clear indication of the cause - although it does look like a fully-stalled left wing after getting in jetwash. Perplexing... and tragic.

RIP and condolences to his family, friends, competitors and everyone involved.
It only serves to fill me with appreciation and awe of the professionalism shown by the NZ and visiting jet pilots who raced for us at Wanaka in 2014.

It only serves to fill me with appreciation and awe of the professionalism shown by the NZ and visiting jet pilots who raced for us at Wanaka in 2014. Two of them have since died in crashes, I believe. A press release on WONZ at the time (link) named Curt Brown, John Kokshoorn (first Kiwi to race at Reno but then living in Oz) and Mike Mangold as "Team Reno" but the NZ Airshow Archive entry for WOW 2014 says it was Kokshoorn, Lee Behel and Rick Vandam. Of those pilots Lee Behel was killed in a Sport Class race at Reno that year (Stuff story here) while Mike Mangold was killed in an L-39 in 2015. Rick Vandam was racing at Reno this year, Curt in 2019 and the Kiwi pilots are all still with us also. I'm sorry to say I'm unsure of Mr Kokshoorn's wherabouts today.
