Blessed, at last, with some semblence of fine weather I was able to make my way to Matamata on Saturday afternoon and check out this event. Good to see many aircraft there, some from well down the South Island. It was the busiest I have seen the place in recent years. At a very rough count, I'd say 50 aircraft there at the time. Even better, there were around 10 that I had personally never seen before. Pioneer 200 ZK-LPB up from RichmondRepresenting bare-bones gyro-ing, Fusioncopter JK-2 Nano ZK-BEE/3While rather more stae of the art is AutoGyro Cavalon Gyro ZK-OHFNo local fly-in should lack a Tiger Moth, in this case ZK-AUDand the American take on basic training, Boeing-Stearman A75N1 ZK-RJSThe runway in use was 10R, while competitions were taking place on RW10L. Here Progressive Aerodyne Searey ZK-WET/3 gets seriousAnother newbie to me was Rangiora-based Australian Av Works Karatoo J6C ZK-KTWJust before I departed, the formation take-offNice to actually be able to get to an aviation event at last.

It was a very good event. And nice to catch up with you there Peter, along with several other friends.

Approx 50 aircraft and over 70 guests. We had a ball... my partner and I had designed and built 300g bombs for the competition - made skinny enough to fit through the window air-vents of many of them. Note for us... next time we use stronger ribbons for the bomb tails so those that choose to hold the bomb by the tail dangling out the window in the wind won't prematurely drop them in the corn field 200m short... At least they got to take a ribbon home! Thanks to those that joined us for the weekend from across the country.
Pete Kirby, secretary Matamata Aero Club.
