I am wondering if people are actually enjoying the idea I have been trying with the month-long themed series on The Wings Over New Zealand Show? In this case, Vampire Month.
Have you been enjoying the Vampire theme? And have you been listening to them all as they come out? (or do you intend to when you get time!?)
Or would you prefer the series to revert to unrelated topics each episode to add more variety? (Of course this Vampire topic has a lot of non-Vampire content within the episodes too, such as Venom, Harvard, DC-6, Skyhawk and even F-4 Phantom stories but if you've not been paying attention, you probably did not realise that).
Would you like to see more shorts serials, perhaps special months, dedicated to a theme in future?
I would love to hear some feedback please. I have not heard much at all through the series on how people are enjoying the theme. I can assure you the episode released today with Jim Barclay is a cracker, and I have recorded the final Vampire Month episode with Brett Emeny for release on Wednesday the 30th.

Hi Dave, I have listened to all of the interviews for Vampire month. I think the theme is an excellent choice and as you say it does cover a wide range of topics. Jim Barclay's interview is mandatory listening. Keep it up Dave.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. The anecdotes and colouring-in of history was informative and entertaining. Good work Dave, and thanks to all the participants for sharing their memories

Thanks John. I have had numerous nice comments sent in personal messages about the series too.
So, what aircraft type or topic would make a good future theme? Ideas please people...

What about the Canberra?

That is definitely a possibility, Don.

I think it would be useful to have podcasts of the operations of the various post-war types. There's the period up until the mid 1960's when there were many WW2 era aircraft being operated, such as the C47, Sunderland, Mustangs, Mosquitos and the like. Then there's the early days of the Orions (Topical given their eventual transition out of operational service), Hercules, and Iroquois that gave such long service life to the RNZAF. Don has already mentioned the Canberra so there plenty of scope from an historic perspective of various types of aircraft in multiple roles across a variety of squadrons.
There may not be scope for a month for some of the aircraft perhaps, but they would help provide variety to podcast listeners. There's always the possibility of standout interviews coming from a themed podcast, such as the interview with Jim Barclay that covered some interesting ground from Vampire to Skyhawk, his exchange posting to the F4 Phantom, plus a glimpse into the F16 deal.

There are certainly some postwar types operated by the RNZAF that could make the subject of some good serials.
Others would be better suited to single but in-depth episodes.
And some might be impossible to find guests who can talk first-hand about it.
Some types I'd like to cover more from the postwar period in either serials or one-offs include: Canberras (though a few episodes already cover them) Skyhawks (though a few episodes already cover them) Andovers Sunderlands (though a few episodes already cover them) Catalinas Mustang Mosquito Iroquois (though a few episodes already cover them) Dakota

Echoing some of the above, it might be interesting to hear from crew attached to maritime patrol Sunderlands and Orions, and Transport Hastings/Daks and Andovers/Hercules considering the transition changes and, as noted by Obiwan, the topical nature of these subjects.

I have recorded two new episodes, one with current crew and engineers on No. 5 Squadron and the other with the same on No. 40 Squadron, at Whenuapai a few weeks back. They are to mark the end of great long eras and to talk abut the coming new fleets. I am just waiting for the Defence Public Affairs people to listen to the edited episodes and sign them off for release, and they will come straight out when that happens, a week apart.

Great idea, Dave. Make a great comparison if you can talk to some of those involved when the two fleets first arrived in NZ. The aircraft were a totally different beast (especially electronically) back then.

There are certainly some postwar types operated by the RNZAF that could make the subject of some good serials. Perhaps the Aermacchi MB339CB Macchi would make an interesting aircraft to focus on, too? Maybe not a whole series, but a one-off at least.

Hi Dave, my two cents: I personally really like episodes that look in-depth at particular missions, exercises, operations etc. I find these sorts of episodes hugely complimentary to episodes that just focus on a particular type that is used for said missions etc.
