It produced around 85% of the country's jet fuel. Another complete balls up.

Anyone with half a brain could see this coming. How the government let the fuel companies shut down the refinery and then worse, dismantle and destroy it, was madness. It was clearly a security issue for New Zealand and should never have been allowed to be discontinued. In fact this goes right back to the 1980's when the Labour government gave away this national asset, along with $80 million, to the fuel companies - that should never have happened. It should always have been a nationalised, state owned asset for the security of New Zealand.
Megan Wood should be hung out to dry for her piss poor handling of this, single-handledly creating a national emergency with her inept leadership and misinformation.

Sure as hang didn't take long to expose the vulnerability did it? And it wasn't as if we hadn't already seen the effect of our vulnerability before...

Exactly, the pipeline leak a few years ago when the digger cracked the pipe showed exactly how a fuel supply issue would affect things. The government should have recognised this as a major security issue, but sadly they are utterly incompetent and corrupt in every way so we end up with the current situation.

There is a lot of excellent reading about Marsden Point on Telegram channels (search Marsden) and a very recent highly informative video on You Tube, where Liz Gunn interviews two long-serving employees. Marsden produced very high grade jet fuel, much appreciated by airlines operating to NZ.

Now now OJ. We cannot dare to have an industry in New Zealand that produces high grade product better than anywhere else. It must be stopped. Shut it down and buy lower quality at a higher price from offshore, like our international trade agreements dictate!

The interview below regarding national fuel reserves would indicate that the cockup is part of a much large failure of governance over a much longer period, allowing fuel storage capacity to be purely determined by fuel company's commercial concerns. Apparently this applied to the case for the continuation of Marsden point as well. How many days storage does the RNZAF keep I wonder & is it counted as part of the national reserves? www.rnz.co.nz/national/programmes/ninetonoon/audio/2018870370/does-the-country-have-adequate-fuel-reserves

Just a complete lack of strategic thinking across the board and time with our politicians. The country is vulnerable in several ways and I bet it will get worse before it gets better.
