Hi all, I thought this very special aircraft deserved its own thread rather than being lost in its original discussion location: Glyn Powell's original airworthy De Havilland Mosquito restoration is now at Ardmore and is being completed for an American client. Fantastic news and I am so, so excited to see her fly at last!

Jaiden Denholm of Avspecs kindly sent me this photo to post here. They put the wings back on NZ2308 yesterday.

When will you guys be able to keep one there and when will the UK Mosquito Groups, pool resources and get one over here?

I guess we can keep 1 here once someone kindly has a spare $8-10 Million to pour into 1? It's just a matter of money. Suitable projects and capabilities are the easy bit here.
As for the 2 UK consortiums, aren't 1 reinventing the wheel and building 1 from scratch locally up there? And the other crowd, who had dreams of buying Glyns project above, seem to have gone quiet?

It's come a fair way since I first saw it in 1968!

I guess we can keep 1 here once someone kindly has a spare $8-10 Million to pour into 1? That is US$10 million too, not NZ$. Plus you'd need another million on top of that to insure it, secure it, hangar it and maintain it, and to fill the fuel and oil tanks regularly. I really doubt we will see one here permanently now. There are very few New Zealanders with the sort of money needed who would also have the will to do it and have youth on their side. Plus there are not enough airshow events that pay for big ticket acts like a Mossie in this country to make it viable and worth the huge cost of insurance. Even if you could put it on Part 115 and do rides it would be an enormous cost to the customer and not likely very economic.

Unfortunately as Dave said it's a massive Investment for a flier. I think we are spoilt here having a "live" Mosquito at Omaka plus MOTAT's example and the ongoing restoration of Ferrymead's example. The Air Force Museum has the basis of a restoration but even as static will require considerable investment in expertise and probably would need a fuselage built off the molds(at a cost). So unless one of us becomes really staggeringly rich a flyer is probably not going to stay here. (Or if not a rebuild buy one of the fliers and bring it back if the price is right?)

As much as I'd love to see one permanently based here, we can also appreciate the fact that we get to see a big variety of individual Mosquitos and other warbirds compared to many other places, with the restorations that take place here. Never in my wildest dreams as a child would I have thought I'd get to see a Mosquito, a P-39, a Polikarpov I-16, an LA-9 etc. etc. fly even once.

I imagine there may be confidentiality/NDA situations at play with this very special project, but has there been any progress which can be shared?

Sorry, James's account posted it! I was also distracted by trying to find an RSS feed as I no longer use any social media where they post.

Good write up Dave. I had been thinking this might be the last one until you mentioned number 5 (5!!) for Peter Monk. If I recall correctly this is a B.IV?

Saw the moulds for a UK Moz being finished off at Guy Black's facility on my last trip. Beautiful workmanship
