Classic Flyers has officially confirmed, because of "the weather looking dodgy" that the Open Day has been transferred to Saturday 4 February. Start and finish times plus intended events remain as originally planned.

Well, after several (too many) days of rain and regional flooding, the weather gods turned on a stunner even though the cloud base was about 800 feet on my drive to Tauranga Airport to do finishing touches in setting up the Open Day. By 10am it was brilliant sunshine and so about 3000 people were entertained from 10am till 2pm with local aviation talent provided predominantly by Classic Flyers aircraft. Engine run ups were performed by Kittyhawk (locally assembled from parts retrieved from the Pacific and Siberia), Avenger NZ2539, Vampire NZ5751 and Aermachhi NZ6469. Other aircraft in attendance but not limited to, were: Aerial displays performed by local Stearmen ZK-USA and ZK-XAF, Gyrocopter ZK- and T-51 Mustang ZK-MPC.
On static display were the Aerospatiale SA319B Alouette III FAE-397 (fuselage only in children's playground), Cessna 188 ZK-CQN (in children's playground), NuWaco T-10 ZK-WTW, Waco YMF ZK-YMF, Bf108/Nord 1002 Taifun ZK-WFI, BN-2A-21 Islander ZK-KTR (in pieces), Harvard NZ1066, Heron ZK-BBM, Swordfish (ex Motat - in children's playground) and on its first public outing Luscombe Silvaire 8E N1529B.
The following were hangared, including some which are suspended; B-17 film prop fuselage, Catalina fuselage (had been used as spare parts for ZK-PBY), Cessna 150 ZK-CGI, Devons NZ1802 and NZ1808, Europa ZS ZK-CHV(2), Fletcher FU-24-300 ZK-CRY(1) displayed as ZK-BDS, Hall Cherokee II ZK-GBT, Harvard NZ1091, Cessna A-37B ZK-JTL, Duster glider ZK-GSR, Hintz homebuilt helicopter (not registered), Hunter RSAF 516 (partially dismantled for export), Pearse replica (ex Motat), Pitts S-1C N7BH, Schleicher Ka6Cr ZK-GFD, Scout (incomplete), Skyhawk NZ6201, Slingsby T31B ZK-GAU, Spitfire Mk V replica JK517, Swallow ZK-GCD, Tiger Moth ZK-BSN, Ulf glider (not registered), Vampire NZ5767 in pieces but being restored for static display, Venom ZK-VNM(2), Vans RV-3 ZK-RVE (1), Yakovlev Yak-52 ZK-YAC.

It certainly turned heads when it arrived at Classic Flyers. Its attendance came about in that I have a young volunteer on my Archives team taking a gap year from studying engineering in England. He has been doing the rounds of various hangars at Tauranga Airport and meeting folk including the Silvaire's owners. On finding out which hangar, I called round and invited them to attend, weather permitting and so they did.
