Found a reference to this Airfield in NZ Archives records, from NZ Civil Aviation Dept dating back to 1965-1970. Can anyone provide details on this mystery Airfield, especially location? Cheers. (This will avoid having to visit Wellington to peruse said archives!)

I have to say we're on the same wavelength zkdex - goes back to your asking about Ohiwa and others. Te Whakao was originally "The Te Whakao Clearing" to the East of Lake Taupo and way in behind Motutere. In an early venture, the famous Ron Connell first owned an Auster AYO (thanks Peter) and then the rebuilt Cessna 180 CWL (ex BDB and back.) The 180 was signwritten "Te Whakao Tourist Co Courtesy Plane" or similar and flew hunters in to the clearing from Taupo. This is circa 1970. In those days the clearing was surrounded by tall manuka and native regrowth but has long since vanished into the huge Lake Taupo Forest It's the light blue bit at the back of the Forest Map here: www.ltft.co.nz/land-forest/I'd be pleased to hear any more.....

That's Bob Tremaine - he was a earlier pioneer of back-blocks aviation in Taupo. His activities would be worthy of recording too

Thank you for the feedback and the knowledge that is still out there! My checking of land blocks and maps places this area around Bullring, Kaimanawa State Forest Park map NZMS274, 1982. The land blocks are called Te Whakao 1,2 and 3,located around the Hinemaiaia River and adjacent to Kaimanawa Forest Park.

That's Bob Tremaine - he was a earlier pioneer of back-blocks aviation in Taupo. His activities would be worthy of recording too Bob Tremaine was mentioned in Bruce Gavin's "Heartland High Flyer" and I've also found him mentioned in a couple of books about trout fishing at Taupo. Now I find one Robert Tremaine, 59, of Taupo, in the passenger list of NZ901 (Erebus)
