You would think they would wait until they actually had new aircraft before retiring them. Guess the hangars are going to be pretty clean, not much else for them to do in the meantime....

This one is retiring now because it is due it's year-long Group Servicing, which is pointless because by the time that is done the replacements will be arriving.
As for the hangars, I was told there that one it to be restored and done up. The other is to be removed and replaced.

Was 003 the third H model off the production line? I think I went to Fiji on 003 and came back on 005 during an army exercise in the 70s (Tropic Kauri).

My favourite of the Kiwi Hercs, I was lucky enough to have 20 minutes in the right hand seat of 03 as an ATC cadet holding it straight & level as well as a few gentle turns. Fun times and great memories for a young fella back in the early 1980's!

Shame there wasn’t a bit more fanfare around this, and greater notice of the final flight so that people could go see it.
All the same, 58 years of service is fantastic.

We were wondering what was going on yesterday, we'd booked in a drone survey of storm damaged property on cliffs in Greenhithe (between the 2 runway vectors and in sight of the runway as it happens). RNZAF Base Whenuapai tower called us to delay operations as they were about to commence "Low Level Training" for the next 1hr to 1.5hrs. Shortly after we were treated to the sight of 2x C-130 taking off and making several low passes.
We had VHF radio on site and heard much of the communications between the aircraft and the tower. One memorable and slightly hilarious communication was the final departure of '03. The aircraft was lined up for takeoff and permission was given to proceed by the tower...only to be immediately retracted as there was a seagull on the runway. What followed were a few minutes delay (no doubt burning a few hundred litres of precious JetA1) until the gull wandered off the tarmac and '03 could proceed on her final departure
