I'm after the establishment and dissolution dates for the Whakatane Gliding Club, which later became the Eastern Bay of Plenty Gliding Club. The rough time frame I have so far is 1959 to 1994, with the name change around 1979 when the club had already moved to Kawerau. If anyone has specific dates, or corrections to what I have posted, these would be appreciated.

I do not have the actual formation and resolution dates but the following "change of ownership" dates would be indicative. T-31 ZK-GAU was sold by the Tauranga Gliding Club to the Whaktane Gliding Club with the ownership change occurring on 23 July 1959. This glider survives on display at Classic Flyers, Tauranga Airport. On 8 October 1979, Bocian ZK-GEB, which was already registered to the Whakatane club underwent a name change to the Eastern Bay of Plenty Gliding Club. This glider, registered to the Jury Hill Gliding Club, is stored in a sorry state with several other gliders, at Papawai, Wairarapa. As a gliding historian I would be interested to know why you are inquiring.

I have an interest in local (Eastern Bay of Plenty) history, which includes aviation - and my interest in aviation history dates back to well before I moved to these parts! It seems EBOPGC ceased operations well before the Kawerau airfield was carved up for power plants and log yards - and I got to know that airfield well having been on many forestry health surveillance flights to/from that airfield. As for the change in name, this seems to have occurred as far back as 1972 - their Auster ZK-BDM was registered to EBOPGC in July 1972; and I've seen a "wanted to purchase" advert in the name of EBOPGC from around the same time.

According to the Club News pages of Gliding Kiwi Magazine October / November 1970 the club is recorded as Whakatane Gliding Club. The next issue, December 1970 / January 1971, it is recorded as Eastern Bay of Plenty Club. Neither issue specifically records that the name was changed but evidently it did occur in this time span.
