I was very surprised just how many passengers were carried in a year, considering the small number of airliners and the few seats in each that were available.
ACTIVE AIR LINES
EXPANSION CONTINUED
65,000 PASSENGERS CARRIED
[BY TELEGRAPH — SPECIAL REPORTER] WELLINGTON, Tuesday
Reference to the continued expansion of internal air services was made by the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, in the Public Works Statement released to-day. He said a feature of the operations had been the regularity and safety that had been achieved, and this showed that the aerodromes and air route facilities were being developed on sound lines.
For the year ended June 30, 1939, there were 2015 miles of air lines, Mr. Semple .stated. The distance flown totalled 1,992,159 miles, and 65,483 passengers, 224,7341b. of freight and 332,648lb. of mail had been carried.
There were now 59 licensed aerodromes, 10 emergency landing fields, six new fields initially licensed and 16 new fields under development. The provision of base facilities for the overseas air services was mentioned and the Minister said that, in anticipation of and to prepare for possible future developments of aviation in the Pacific, the department had equipped and despatched an expedition into the Pacific to carry out preliminary surveys for landing facilities. Investigatory work in this connection was proceeding.
