Today is the first day of the 2023 edition of this supposedly annual event. Ideal weather in Hamilton this morning - nil cloud and a very light westerly wind. The event is promoted by the Waikato Hot Air Ballon Club, and their centrepice today was their new Cameron Z-90 ZK-WBC/3, which arrived here in January. The balloon inflation started at Innes Common at 7am, and by 7.30 most were ready to lift off. First away was the locally-based Kubjcek BB70Z ZK-UPP/3, another fairly recent import This years special shapes were two visitirs from the USA Tiger head N625TG and Squirrel N625SL Other overseas vistors were three from Australia, each of which had attended previous Hamilton events Kavanagh E-120 VH-ANJ Cameron O-31 VH-MKQ Cameron O-26 VH-EKP The furtherist travelled NZ entrant was Cameron N-65 ZK-RKB from Queenstown While Cameron C-70 ZK-PPI makes its identity quite clear This one was reluctant to reveal its identity. The sponorship on the basket says 'Perrys' so it is possibly a Waikato-based item, as Perrrys is a large local civil engineering firm in that area. Any idea of this balloons identity? Update: I am reliably informed that this is Aerostar Raven S52A N9129VCouldnt have been a better morning for it. Thanks, weather Gods.

It was the perfect morning for balloons. I saw a heap of them flying over Hamilton on my way to Te Kowhai this morning.

Yes, a very pretty sight. Both mornings they drifted directly overhead where I work at 61 King St in Frankton.
For trivia buffs, the large white house on the top of the hill with tall chimneys seen in some photos was owned and occupied by Ossie James for several years before he moved to a new unit in Airdrie Place. He had to cash up the elaborate residence in River Road in order to re-privatise James Aviation as he was frightened that Ron Brierly would get a majority shareholding and then asset-strip the company, which was his modus operandi of the day.

N625SL is "Tico" the Sloth. I think I'd prefer a Squirrel to a Sloth.
