In my time at Wigram on NATs flight, with the F-27in the mid-1980s, a Knuk bought a number of BD 5 kit sets in from somewhere, They were scattered around the no 6 hangars and sometimes got in the way. I left for 3 hangar 1987 or so, Any one knows what happened to these kit sets!! I lived near the Wigram base and never saw any fly. I never saw one fully assembled.

The knuck involved was Tony Kenworthy (not to be confused with The Mt Cook Engineering Manager of the same name aka "Mr Blobby") TK was trying to buy up all the BD 5 stuff he could. He ended up in a bit of strife but thats another story

There have been seven registered over the years, but the only one I have actually seen fly was Tauranga-based ZK-XBD back in 2012. Kenworthy seemed to have ZK-DVE from early 1984, but this was cancelled in March 1992 as 'Not completed'.

ZK-XBD is the one that Andrew Vincent has now and has just converted to a BD-5J. He is close to test flying it with the new engine. ZK-ZBD is also on the register with the I.S.J.Griffin Family Trust in New Plymouth, but I do not know if it has ever flown. For some interesting insight on how the 30 or so BD-5 kits ended up being imported to NZ by New Zealand Aerospace Industries (who were involved in the aircraft's design originally) and the pitfalls of the kit at that time, have a listen to this episode of the WONZ Show with former BD-5 owner John Hansen. cambridgeairforce.org.nz/WONZShow/2019/07/john-hansen/

He ended up in a bit of strife but thats another story Those bloody things were cluttering up my hangar (No 6) for quite a while. Tony used to try and con my guys into helping him assemble/repair them. He had three at one stage (that's in the hangar) Tony was a pilot on F27's

When I worked in No. 6 Hangar the only homebuild stored there was Phil Murray's cute little Midget Mustang. I never did get to see him fly it, sadly.

A Dr Rose(?) built one (ZK-ZIP?)which apparently made a couple of flights at Ardmore snd Pete Sheehan built one and was fitting a Honda Civic motor. I only saw it once in it's custom built trailer.

That is excellent news and will be spectacular - I damn near wore out my Air Expo '92 tape in large part to the BD-5J's appearance there, so the idea of seeing one in person is intoxicating.

I can confirm ZK ZBD has flown, I was the owner's safety observer for the first flights. The aircraft is beautifully built by fastidous and saftey conscious owner. It has not flown for many years as the owner has a previous back injury from a sky diving incident.

ZK-DVE was assembled by NZAI and displayed at the AACA flyin at Bridge Pa in 1974 in primer paint. I recall a NZ build BD-5 was involved in a landing accident in W.A,possibly Perth, about 15 or more years back
