The Soviet's annual air show, demonstrating "Russia's safety from aerial invasion," was opened at Tushino airport in the presence of Soviet political and military-leaders, the diplomatic corps and 500,000 spectators.
A feature of the display included four high-speed mystery bombers, one of which has a fish-like back.
Other outstanding items were formation flying by 200 training aeroplanes at 350 miles an hour, and an "air train" consisting of 27 gliders which discharged a swarm of parachutists.
