A few thoughts for a wet miserable Sunday morning
Several things surprise me about this thread, probably the most surprising being that the enquirer "biggles1930s" joined the Group, asked the question 26 minutes after joining, and has never been back to see the result!
I'm surprised too (and disappointed) that no one else chipped in as I'd hoped to fill in some of the gaps in my memory. It's the sort of question often asked by zkdex and in the past there's been some very interesting info come forward - I think of Galatea for instance.
I'd first visited Otaki in the very early 60s but only occasionally and in the later 60s flew in and out quite a lot when flying from Paraparaumu. However, I don't know anything of its origins but I suspect that Dudley Payne was involved and I also knew a few other members of the Otaki and Districts Aero Club but all are, sadly, now deceased
I'm hoping this may stir something up...?

When I was CEO of the KDAC 2006 - 2010 we held regular rallies at Otaki with aircraft flying in from NZPP. competitions for LWOP and short landings and take-offs were conducted, along with the perquisite BBQ at the end of the day. Normally around three C152s from the club and the occasional C172 or C182 private owned by club members would be there. A hangar had been built next to Rob Koefoed's property to house some privately owned light aircraft.

I think there is another thread to this topic with quite a lot more info about the airfield's beginnings, the Otaki clubs early aircraft Moth Minor ZK-AKM was I think their first and founding member Dudley Payne. I did contribute to it probably last year

I've resurrected that thread MM but it's far more about Dudley Payne than it is about Otaki.

Today I revisited the Will Scotland memorial plaque on the southern side of the Otaki river (just off the old state highway 1). Plaque has faded since my last visit about 10 years ago, if I find those pics I'll post them. In the meantime:

Thank you for sharing that Antonio. I've been reading Venture The Far Horizon and have been contemplating stopping by on my next visit that way.
