This article appeared in The Press, dated 4th of February 1982:
So did the Tornado actually seriously come under assessment for the RNZAF when they were looking to replace the Skyhawk in the mid-1980s (and ended buying ten more and up upgrading the fleet)?

I cannot help thinking at the time in the mid-80s the Tornado would not have been as versatile as a Skyhawk?

Funny that the RAF has scrapped all its tornados but a lot of the RNZAF A-4Ks are still going strong.

Funny that the RAF has scrapped all its tornados but a lot of the RNZAF A-4Ks are still going strong. I think the Tornado may be "going stronger" though given that there are still over 200 aircraft operational with the Italian, German and Saudi airforces with their introduction being over 40 years ago. www.flightglobal.com/download?ac=90688

Bit of a stretch to compare operational aircraft with flying training aids.

They were flak bait in the Gulf War wern't they? Only due to the role they were tasked with . No aircraft would fair well flying in a straight line at low level to bomb runways. Once they could operate higher and laze targets losses came down.
