I came across a drawer full of old models I had stored at Mum's place today. I decided to try to photograph them so you can all have a laugh. I'm nowhere near the league of Calum, Talon and others when it comes to modelling, and it has to be rememebred these were made quite some years ago. Some were made while in the RNZAF, living in barracks, when I had next to no facilities too, so they ain't great.
Sorry the lighting isn't great either. I just bunged them on the spare bed and shot them, in a hurry.
Here is an example of that. Really made for a bit of fun and to quell the boredom. The old Revell 1/32nd scale P40E. I found some decals for Geoff Fisken's plane but it didn't include the stripes (today I'd paint them of course, but then I was a novice so sourced them from a 1/48th sheet, yikes!)
And these two used to hang in my barrack room at Hobsonville, and later Wigram. 1/72nd. Today missing some bits, they're around somewhere but were damaged in a transit between bases...
While at Wigram I built this 1/48th Hasegawa P51D in Otago markings (blue and yellow checks) and it looked really good. Later in 1995 when the Wings Over Waikato airshow was being organised my model club from Hamilton decided to have an exhibition to help protote it, in the Hamilton Library. We had to, in short time, produce 1/48th examples of the aircraft that would be there. I decided a new scheme was in order as i didn't have time for a whole new kit. Sadly a cat incident has meant the loss of props and tailwheel! Someday it'll get fixed...
For that same exhibition I also made Sir Tim's P40K, I think from the Mauve kit with a resin tail conversion
The last model i made for that exhibition was the C47, this being the Monogram kit in 1/48. I had always intened this kit to become a RNZAF example. When the exhibit came along I decided to do this as a temporary thing, and repaint it later (with a rebuild too as it was a rush job. Well, that has still not happened! And I bloody broke the undercarriage today when I was dusting it off! Grrr.
One with a bit more light from the flash
The last model I photographed today was my Tamiya (or was it Hasegawa, so long ago...) Spitfire Vc in the colours of Johnnie Houlton's 485 (NZ) Sqn machine, made in 1995 too, but not for the exhibit. Again, undercarriage has been boken, I think again by Barney, my dear late cat.
Johnnie's mascot and good luck charm, the pink elephant. I have had it confirmed by Carolyn Grace herself that ML407 also carried this artwork when he flew it!
