Starting to sound like an agent for Tamiya, but they do a rattle can spray primer for plastic. I don't know if it is a different formula to regular paint or not. Comes in light gray or white. Light colours are best for priming, dark can hide stuff. I think the idea behind the primer is not only to show up any flaws, but also to provide a better surface for your topcoat to adhere to. Some swear by washing the model parts in soapy water prior to painting, to remove agents used to get the plastic out of the moulds, which can supposedly affect your final finish, but truth be told, I haven't noticed any difference since I started washing. A gloss coat prior to putting any decals on should prevent silvering of the clear decal areas, then another gloss coat over the decals will blend them in for the painted on look. Hope this helps in your quest

Cheers Calum, Can the primer just be normal old paint? Or is there a specific primer for plastic models I should use? In the past (my teenage years) I just painted 2-3 coats on to the raw plastic...but having read about primers and gloss coats...I need to make a good job of the P3...(I have a critical "boss" )... I just use any old paint I have lying around (light greys/whites light blues). I have used the Tamyia primer in a can but I have found it is quite thick (as a primer should be) but as it's thick it tends to fill up some of the fine detail. particularly in the Hasegawa kits. So know I just up those old tins I have lying around.

Best model shop in Wgtn is Modelcrafts and Hobbies ( www.modelcraftsandhobbies.co.nz/ ). There is a shop in Lower Hutt which will be a bit closer, it's on High Street in the middle of town, but it does not have the same selection as modelcrafts and hobbies. The Lower Hutt shop has recently changed it's name and I can't remmeber what it is, but it's accross the road from the Westpac bank. Just a point to note regarding the earlier posts, the Iroquois and the Orion are NOT painted the same shade of grey, I'm not sure if that is what was meant by the post at the top of this page but I thought I'd just better clarify that.

I'm not so sure Modecraft is the best shop in Wellington. You should have a look at Small's Books & Models, 39-41 Ghuznee St, which is owned by an old air force mate of mine...

Small's is a bit more eclectic than Modelcrafts and Hobbies. M+H has a bigger range and more 'experts' on hand for advice. Small's caters for a slightly broader clientele (being a book/magazine shop as well as a model shop) as well as being the only Wellington stockist of Gunze Sangyo and Xtracolour paints in store, among other things. Also Capital Books on Featherston street in the CBD is a good source of hard copy reference material on just about any subject. Difficult for me to visit without being tempted to buy something. ;D

I have to agree with mumbles, and I do think M+H is better than Smalls, since it has a much larger and wider selection. Although stocking Gunze and xtra colour is an advantage, I like those paints but outside of Auckland they are hard to come by, I'll have to make the effort to visit Smalls next time I'm in town.

Sorry for the late reply - missed the second page. The correct FS number for the Orions is FS16251. The ONLY model paint manufacturer who has this colour in the range is Xtracolor/Xtracrylics available from Hannants. The markings are all FS 16118.
The ONLY model shop worth visiting in Wellington is Modelcrafts and Hobbies. Richard Alexander is very helpful and a pretty good guy to boot (so is Peter for that matter).
Hope this helps somewhat.
