I dont think anyone makes a P3K, but if you have done a bit of modelling the best option is to find a Hasegawa P3C as this is about the best base kit available. Microscale or Stinger (Talon) do High Vis RNZAF decals, and I think there are some low vis sets just starting to come on the market. To make an accurate K model, the C kit will need a few mods, such as filling in all the sonobouy chutes under the rear fuse, and changing the faceted thermal imager under the nose to the round dome type. The Hasegawa P3 is still in production and most good model shops should be able to get one for you, alternatively try E-Bay or TradeMe. Hope this helps.

I have built the Hasegawa P3 many years ago when i was in the RNZAF. I didn't do the mods, just painted it in our colours - and then there was a set of decals but I can't recall who from, may have been Roo Decals of Aussie. We had to order in the decals through the long gone Te Atatu model shop and they took ages (there were a few of us airmen after tem). I recently dragged the kit out of long term storage where it had ben slightly damaged and photographed it for the forum. See here rnzaf.proboards43.com/index.cgi?board=Modelling&action=display&thread=1132832890For some reason the decals then didn't come with the Albatross for the tail so it depicts an early service one

Gidday lads, well I have finished my Hasegawa P3C (in RNZAF "K" form) and now need to paint it. Whats the best model paint around that will match the tactical grey paint scheme currently on the RNZAF P3's? I have asked the wife to see if she can get some real P3 paint, but it apparently may melt the plastic!!
Also, does anyone know of a local supplier who does RNZAF 5Sqn decals for the grey scheme? I was walking around the P3 the other day and there is not a lot of decals needed, so it should'nt be to hard... (hopefully!) ;D

You would be better off asking her to get in touch with the S&S guys and find out what the FS number is, then find that in model paint.
The real paint will not be any good for you. It is very glossy, which will not look right on your model, and it will probably be way too thick as well.

Plus the real paint will be carsonogenic (sp?), ie cancer causing!
Yes, get your wife to find out the Federal Standard number from the Safety and Surface chaps on 5 Sqn. I don't know what the new clour is in FS code I'm afraid. You may be able to match it to a model paint in the Xtracolor range (which is a Humbrol product but they're exactly matched to real paints). Or another that does proper FS matches is Testors Master Model range I believe if you cannot find it in Xtracolor. The Xtracolor range is also a bonus in that it's pre-thinned for airbrushing but still able to be hand brushed.
I think Talon is doing the new low viz scheme for the RNZAF Orion. Can you confirm please Talon? (he's a member here)

Artwork is done for the main markings (roundels, squadron badge, serial and nose numbers), but the ALPS won't print the dark grey 100% convincingly. I can do a one off set of those as is, if someone wants them, but there is no stencilling, and I won't be releasing these as a commercial item for these reasons, so it would be a case of buyer forewarned. I'm looking around different decal printers to see if these are commercially viable, but it is looking like costs may be prohibitive.

You need to do some WW2 RNZAF decals for P-40's Corsairs and Avengers in 1/48. I think they'd sell quite well. Even here is Aussie ... :-)

I second that Calum. And Dauntless, Harvard, C-47, Hudsons, and some other types would be nice too.

Hey guys, am having no luck waiting for 5Sqn maintainers to come up with paint codes! So, do any of you know of a reasonable match for the current grey paint thats on the RNZAF's P3's? I want to be able to go into the model shop and give them a code and buy it! Thanks in advance!

How about Tamiya XF-54, 'Dark Sea Grey' folks? Seems closish on the models I've used it on and in the bottle. It is matt, so would need a gloss coat.

I just remembered that this is same grey used on the Iroquios. I got a picture from a mate and he had the FS number It's FS 26188 Picture from my web site RNZAF page www.gibstuff.net/aircraftAnyway, I don't get to hung up on FS matches. Use what you think looks right. I often find the FS colours are too dark on the models. Scale and the amount of paint you are looking has quite an effect on colours. Tamyia XF 54 looks pretty good to me These to pages are well worth book marking www.ipmsstockholm.org/colorcharts/colorcharts.aspwww.ipmsstockholm.org/colorcharts/colorcharts_2.asp

Thanks for the replies guys, one thing though, do I need to paint a primer on the model first? Or can I just paint it straight away with the XF 54?
Cheers boys, Andy

Prime it first. Any old colour will do. The primer will show up any imprefections ,in particular areas where the filler isn't smooth or hasn't been blended properly into the surrounded plastic.

Cheers Calum,
Can the primer just be normal old paint? Or is there a specific primer for plastic models I should use? In the past (my teenage years) I just painted 2-3 coats on to the raw plastic...but having read about primers and gloss coats...I need to make a good job of the P3...(I have a critical "boss" )...
