Thanks to OJ for bringing this to my attention. This is fascinating. My old nextdoor neighbour Pat Monk worked there before coming to NZ to design the Airtrainer and the Cresco.

Dave, I was amazed to see that. What a snapshot of science and living in the late 50s. Woomera was certainly a remote posting for anyone there and all those great shots of the Freighteners, Lincolns, Meteor and the pommie stuff there.... Easy to build a rock garden and it would seem from the social side that females shaving their legs had not yet become de rigeur

...and it would seem from the social side that females shaving their legs had not yet become de rigeur As well as sandals with socks! And all this and more can now be done with a chip smaller than your little finger nail!

You can get huge detail on all of this project by reading the book Fire Across the Desert by Andrew Morton. It is the official defence department history of what was known as the Australia UK joint project, though ultimately the Australians paid the greater amount to smoke their joint!
I have a copy of this book but it is currently out on loan. It is profusely illustrated and has many diagrams. I have not researched whether it is available digitally. I do recommend it.
With regard to the video, just a reminder to you all that the last batch of (I think about 14) Jindiviks were 50% built by PAC in the 1990s, written about elsewhere in this Forum.

Does the ADF still use Woomera or Salisbury? Is there still a town and active community there?
Last year I watched the film Operation Buffalo on Netflix, set there in the 1960s, and while it seemed quite accurate in many ways, the main story seems to have been fiction for entertainment purposes. Not a bad film though.

Does the ADF still use Woomera or Salisbury? Is there still a town and active community there? Yup, they sure do use Woomera. One of the guys I was working with a couple of years back loved his posting at Woomera but then his idea of fun is taking a 4WD out bush with a swag and enjoying stark, empty nature, so he may be kinda unique there Woomera Village is still there and, like Point Cook, is open to the visiting public with a hotel, caravan park and such (apparently the museums there are worth checking out). Not really a big place but it's still there and exists to support the ADF people working at the range.

Thanks Grant. Not the sort of place I'd want to go on holiday. LOL

Not the sort of place I'd want to go on holiday. LOL I would tend to agree, but if I'm within a few hours of the area, it could be worth an overnight detour just to experience it and visit the museums
