There are very few photos that I can find of live AIM-9L model Sidewinders being carried by Kiwi Skyhawks. The few I can find (eg the single live firing in Don Simms book) appear to show the missile painted white. Photos of RNZAF Captive AIM-9L with the rear fins attached also seem to have white rear fins.
This doesn't make sense to me as only the first batches of L model Sidewinders for the USAF/ US Navy where painted white as the colour was switched to light grey in the early 80's. We did not purchase L model Sidewinders untill the very late 80's.
Can anyone shed some light on this? Thanks.
