PLANE HIT TANK
REPRIMAND FOR PILOT
(0.C.) CITRISTCHURCH, Saturday
The sentence of the general court-martial on Flying-Officer Francis Kenneth Woodward, the pilot of a Royal New Zealand Air Force aeroplane which hit the turret of a tank during manoeuvres near the Waimakariri River on January 5 has now been promulgated. Flying-Officer Woodward was found guilty on two charges, first, an act in flying which was likely to cause bodily injury to persons, and, second, negligently damaging His Majesty's aircraft.
The decision of the court-martial was that Flying-Officer Woodward be severely reprimanded and be put under stoppages of pay until he has made good the sum or £5 in respect of damage caused to the aircraft concerned.
The court-martial was held on February 15, and Flying-Officer Woodward was then charged with (1) An act in flying at West Melton likely to cause bodily injury to persons in that, being captain of an aircraft, he flew it so as to collide with a General Stuart tank, thereby causing danger of bodily injury to his pupil, Leading-Aircraftman Norman Rupert Overend, also to his passengers, Leading-Aircraftman Charles Blackwood Cornish and W.A.1 Annie May Denley; (2) negligently damaging the aircraft to the extent of £22; (3) an act to the prejudice of good order and Air Force discipline, in that he flew the aircraft at a height below 250 feet, contrary to Air Staff training instructions, which directed that instruction in low flying was to take place at a height of 250 feet. Flying-Officer Woodward was found not guilty on the third charge.

Appears to be NZ1258, although the accident file is dated 19 January 1943 and the brief description is "Forced landing". Further detail indicates " near Dunsandel", "Fce ldg. Walkway matting detached caused stall".

I have noted differences between the date of an incident/accident and the date carried by an accident report. Not sure why.

Sorry, but NZ1258 just doesn't seem right to me. The date being out ? The description of the incident ?
I tried NZ Archives and found four references to Francis Kenneth Woodward. One application to become a Justice of the Peace (1969), and three relating to land transfers (1970's), but nothing else.

I agree, NZ1258 does not really fit, I don't think.

The information Les found was from the official list of RNZAF Accidents contained in NZAP201A. There are only two Wigram based Oxford accidents recorded around that time. 12.1.43 NZ1340 "airscrew hit ground" and 19.1.43 NZ1258 "Forced Landing" There some incidences with the NZAP201A entries were variances between the actual accident date and the recording date. No sure why, but is a fact

Could it have actually been an Army Co-op squadron Vincent, and based at Norwood? Although it mentions a student, so maybe not.

Does anyone know which squadron, school or unit that Woodward, Overend, Cornish and Denley belonged to?

NZDF Serials has Oxford NZ1340 (and I quote), " Written off the books at Wigram on 12 January 1943 while with No.1 SFTS. " No other details. 12/1/1943 is the date given in NZAP201A as the accident date, when it appears that the SOC (struck off charge) action was taken on that day.
