I have added a few dates onto the Calendar for April which are for scale warbird and classic fly-ins. These being radio controlled models, not real aircraft. I thought since many of them are fantastic flying replicas in miniature of NZ aircraft, past and present, it's worth mentioning here.
So check out the 1st and 2nd of April if you're up Warkworth way, or 22nd and 23rd down Wigram way.
As some of you are R/C modellers you may know more dates of scale fly ins that I can add. Please only genuine scale stuff, stuff of historic interest, that sort of thing, not just any old fly in as there are other forums for that sort of thing.
I'm not an r/c modeller but my late Dad was (he was twice President of NZMAA as it happens, and also president of SAANZ for sioe years, which he co-founded).
So I used to sometimes tag along with him sometimes to the large scale model meets and was never disappointed. I remember some lovely Spitfires, Corsairs, a gorgeous Dauntless that did the rounds in RNZAF colours. But my favourite was a HUGE Harvard which was made with real metal skin sheeting for the skin, all riveted faithfully. And unlike most of the others that sounded like annoying Mossies buzzing in your ear, this had a deep throaty engine that chugged away just like a radial, and the exhaust was set up so it actually sounded pretty much like a Harvard in the air. It was painted in 1950's Red Checkers colours, based on a Harvard scheme then flying in NZ Warbird and I think it still does, but I forget the number. 53 I think. Or 57?
I wonder if it's still around. I wish I'd taken a camera that day.
