I am wondering if this was the first time anyone undertook deer hunting and shooting from a helicopter in New Zealand? From The Press, 8th of December 1955.
DEER SHOOTING BY HELICOPTER
U.S. NAVAL OFFICERS’ PLANS
An air-to-ground hunting trip is planned by a number of officers from the United States Nay icebreaker Glacier, now at Lyttleton.
This morning the men will fly in the ship's two helicopters to North Canterbury looking for deer. They hope to chase them from above, shoot from the aircraft, and then land to retrieve the carcases.
Parties from the expedition’s air unit have already been out in the country shooting, and have returned With good bags. On Sunday two officers were the guests of Mr Dick Smith, of Mount Thomas, on an expedition organised by the North Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Deerstalkers’ Association.
They shot two pigs and a deer, which are now in cold storage waiting to be taken aboard the Glacier for Christmas dinner. Another party organised by the association will leave for North Canterbury on a hunting trip today.
