He was the sole occupant of the aircraft. Ward farmer Kevin Loe said the south Marlborough farming community was “totally shocked and dismayed” by the news of his sudden death. ... The incident was referred to the Civil Aviation Authority, and on Sunday, two accident investigators were at the site, meeting with the emergency responders who were the first at the scene. A witness who arrived “only minutes” after the crash told Stuff they saw a “column of smoke and flames soaring”. The Marlborough Aero Club confirmed the gyrocopter was privately owned, and that Pattie was not a member of the club.
