Teresa and I are going to be visiting family in Northland in February next year. We are going to stay in Auckland for a few days first and do some touristy things (probably do MOTAT again and possibly Ardmore but non-aviation things too) before we head up to base ourselves at Paihia. Seeking recommendations from local Forumites re accommadation in Auckland and Paihia. Prefer somewhere with a restaurant off street parking. Don't mind paying for nice surroundings. Cheers Baz

I recently did a trip up to Auckland and stayed at the Travelodge at Wynyard Quarter, right in the city, as I had several places to visit in the central Auckland area.
Central Auckland is expensive now. But the Travelodge was really new and nice. There was a brilliant bakery right next to the entrance, with proper pies. But I have to say the highlight was wandering around the Wynyard Quarter and Viaduct Basin each evening was amazing. All the yachts and the lights, a really special place, that made the expense worth it. There are lots of hotels around that area, so look for the specials and you might get one at a normal price rather than horrendous.
