NZ7004 just buzzed past Hamilton on its farewell tour. Low and fast! Didn't get a photo Yank and Bank, baby! Who cares if it can't be flown again after today...

FR24 showed a pass at 200ft over Woodbourne followed by a sharp turn and climb. It might not be safe to fly again after that.

Followed ot on Flight Radar 24 while I was working on a job at Fairhall, all of a couple of km from Woodbourne. Anticipation was high, video camera ready as NZ7004 crossed the Strait at 600' and 220 kts, only to climb to 1500', join down wind for a touch and go, then a low level circuit and pass followed by a full stop landing...
Video deleted. A mediocre end to a 55 year career

What did you expect? Genuine question.

Well, at least a high-speed low-level pass in a similar manner to that performed at Ohakea and Hood in the previous hour...
Considering the significance of this final act, as evidenced by the preparation, and the Herc's ability to perform, that would have been the least of my expectations

Pity there was no flypast around other parts of NZ! Mind you, we had a Hercules flying over Whakatane a week or so ago, don't think it landed at the airport.

I have just uploaded to the travel@stuff.co.nz a series of photographs from my collection of NZ7004 over the years. Did some great trips in that airframe, twice to the UK 1994/95 to the RIAT, an interesting night safehand courier trip to Sydney in 1977,

Thanks Errol - interesting stuff. I flew back from Fiji on 004 after exercise "Tropic Kauri" in the 1970s, and the article described very well the uncomfortable conditions. I remember the guys who got good seats near the front, but as we descended all the ice in the upper fuselage melted and they got soaked by the constant dripping (this was from condensation after leaving the tropics).
I'm interested to see what happens to 001, especially since it was the very first H model off the production line. There was some talk years ago about Lockheed being interested in it but I've heard nothing since.
