Thur 23rd Nov Check out our new (temporary) hangar doors. 👍 You may have wondered why we announced closure of the NZ Warbirds at Ardmore visitor centre recently. This was a temporary measure due to an extreme weather event that occurred last Tuesday night. A localised microburst/tornado caused damage to our main display hangar resulting in the complete collapse of our main doors and part of the roof ripped off. 🌪️ Thankfully - and by sheer luck - only one aircraft received damage with the rest unscathed. 🙏😅 Today saw 4 large shipping containers delivered to reduce the large opening due to the lack of doors. This is to provide some protection from the elements (and security) until new doors are fabricated and installed. Our reluctance to publicise this until now was to give us time ensure that the hangar facilities and aircraft could be secured as we have had no doors for over a week.😣 Thank you to everyone who came out and lent a hand. You guys are awesome!

Yes a real freaky occurrence, I was told on the quiet about this when it happened, and I find it amazing that those huge hangar doors could be crumpled like paper. Thank goodness there was next to no damage to the aeroplanes, it could have been a lot worse.

Yep just shows how strong mother nature can be. Now imagine the aircraft without the protection of the hangar! Well done hangar doors!

By all accounts it was an extremely localised event, unfortunate for Warbirds but lucky the aircraft mostly escaped ok.

I missed it all by 18 minutes. I was working on harvard 68 after work and i left the hangar at 8.50pm then at 9.08pm the doors got ripped off. It was amazing how the doors got ripped apart. Also ver very lucky one harvard was at aerotech for maintenance and the airtrainer had been flown to whitianga for the night so we had a large gap at the fromt of the hangar or we may have had a crushed airtrainer and more damage to the chipmunk.

Blimey, the potential loss of the Airtrainer prototype is a scary thought. I am glad it and the Harvard were away!

Hi Its been a while since I last visited these pages and I hope what follows is not in the wrong place as I am unsure where to ask a few questions. I am now booked for my revisit to New Zealand from the UK in mid November to mid December this year 2024. Amongst the usual attractions, I plant to visit Ardmore and in particular Warbirds of NZ. What I would like to know is, what is the best and cheapest way for me to travel down from Sky City hotel Auckland to Ardmore? All suggestions are welcome. I have been looking forward so much for the planned trip to NZ since 2020 when covid put a stop to it!!! The only thing is, re Ardmore, is it will be mid week when I am in Auckland and the Friday of that week we'll be flying down to Wellington. Will the Warbird collection be open for a visit? Secondly, will it be worth my time to visit the Ferrymead collection at Christchurch? My other visits to aviation places of interest will be MoTAT(for the second time since 2019), The war museum and on South Island Omaka, Wanaka and Gore/Mandeville plus possibly Ashburton and Wigram for a second time too. PLus anything else I may come across like airfields etc.
All the best and I look forward to you suggestions and help.

Good that there is progress, although I assume the strong winds forecast for Saturday won't help!

Tomorrow is currently forecast to be gusting up to 35kt from the southwest which probably isn't ideal, Sunday is looking much calmer though.

It's since occurred to me that they probably just haven't finished this week, so can't open to the public.

Closed because of health and safety hazards like the dust from concrete cutting that needed to be cleaned up and also mother nature pushing the rain into the hangar from the very strong winds.
