HELICOPTER VISITS TIMARU
WELCOME FROM BIG CROWD
(New Zealand Press Association) TIMARU, December 11.
Timaru saw its first helicopter on Saturday morning. For the tremendous crowd which gathered at Ashbury Park the visit of the machine, a Sikorsky 55 of the United States Antarctic expedition, “Operation Deep Freeze,” was a memorable experience which completely overshadowed the disappointment associated with the helicopter’s failure to arrive as scheduled on Friday.
The pilot, Lieutenant-Commander Constanza, his second pilot, Lieutenant Bacon, and their crew were welcomed to the city by the Mayor (Mr R. E. White), who was accompanied by the Town Clerk (Mr J. M. Jenkins). Mr White expressed his pleasure at the visit of the helicopter.
Mr D. L. Shears, the Timaru helicopter enthusiast, was taken for a short flight. Permission was given to the crowd to inspect the machine at close quarters, and before departing north just before 11 a-m. the helicopter circled the city several times, going out as far as the Timaru Hospital.
