I was asked to speak last week to the Cambridge Rebus group. Before I gave my talk, there was a lady who spoke before me called Di Sharpe on the duties she has as a JP. Very interesting it was, too.
Anyway she mentioned she grew up at Rukuhia as a kid in the 1950s. I asked about it when we were having a cuppa and she said her Dad owned a farm right next to the airfield, on Sharpe Road. She remembered all the aeroplanes there at Rukuhia.
But get this, she casually said that her Dad had an aeroplane that he got from the aircraft dump and it was on their farm. I asked what it was but she did not know, it was just a WWII plane that they played on as kids. She said it was on the farm for years, and one day some men came and took it away. That was all she knew.
Wow!
Does anyone know what this aeroplane was? I have looked on Retrolens but cannot see any planes around Sharpe Road in the 1953 photos, though there are lots of P-40s further south.
