I just saw this photo posted on Facebook by Chris Penk, MP, with the caption, "Lots to consider about our Defence infrastructure needs, as viewed from the air control tower RNZAF Base Auckland (Whenuapai) today". It reminded me that I was told by some of the guys when I was at Whenuapai last year that one of the two big concrete hangars is going to get restored and make really good once No. 5 Squadron had departed, and the other is to be demolished. A bit of a shame to lose one of those iconic hangars after 85 years of brilliant service. But times change. It looks like work has started.

He is a politician....
He is also an ex-RNZN serviceman and a veteran, who takes an interest in the NZDF, so don't knock it.

Some interesting stories doing the rounds at the moment about Whenuapai. I have business contacts that advise that all civilian provided service contracts to the base have been targeted to expire around July 2025 and no renewals or extensions are being offered. Does this imply the end for the base? And is this linked to the new C130 arrival? If anybody can confirm or definitively deny would be good.

The same rumours about the base's future were going around 40 years ago!
