Hi guys, could I possibly pick your brains as to where I could obtain a decal sheet with white Gothic Lettering suitable for under wing serials. I am working on my 1/72 Scale Wellington Mark I NZ300, Which had 36" White serials under each wing, against the black undersurface colouring. Unfortunately this is where inkjet printable decal film, my normal escape path, is of no use to me as without a suitable printer I cant produce white on clear artwork. Hunting around on-line model suppliers no-one seems to offer anything suitable, which seems a little like a missed opportunity as there must be some demand surely. in 1/72 the type would be 12.5mm high (1/2") does anyone have any ideas - without the serial numbers the "NZ" importance of this machine is pretty well lost.....

Have you considered that rub-down lettering stuff? Like Letraset, or other such brands?
There are two ways you can do it. If you find white letters the right size and type, cool. But if they're the more generic black, you spray a white base, then when cured, place the letters gently, and spray the wing colour. Then when dry, use masking tape dabbed on the letters to lift the letraset which has acted as a mask revealing the white lettering. It works, I have tried it.
Another option is get them computer cut onto vinyl by a signwriter. I know you're not keen on airbrushing so this may be the better option for you if you can't find white rubdowns. A good signwriter should be able to produce the letters ok I think. Especially if you take along the font on disk.

Bruce, if you can't find suitable decal lettering online then you could find the font on the net and then use this to create some masks out of vinyl or similar material.
Failing that someone here (unfortunately not me) might have an ALPS printer, so it would just be a matter of you sending them the file that you made up for the font in correct printing size and then they could whack it out for you.
Just a couple of ideas,
Tim.

Hi Guys, thanks for the suggestions, I'm reluctant to use dry transfer rub downs as the kit has quite soft plastic and not too bad representation of the geodetics as surface detail and I am afraid of spoiling that. The Matt black finish will also show rub marks somewhat. Vinyl lettering can be quite good, but it is also quite expensive, and the film is fairly thick compared to decals, so may be a last resort. I'm just surprised that no-one seems to offer basic Number letter decal sets nowdays, I'd have thought that there may have been a demand for that - even amongst the guys building flying models.

Send me an image of the aircraft you're building (via e-mail to vmfa451 at xtra.co.nz) along with actual requirements and I'll get some decals printed for you (for a minimal cost to cover materials - probably between $10 - $20 depending on needs). I have a pile of decal sheets to print for customers which I need to get on to this weekend, but can do them reasonably quickly for you.

www.modelcraftsandhobbies.co.nzThat's the store in Wellington I get most of my stuff from. He supplies decals printed by a company called Carpena which print lettering/codes of various sizes and colours. Included are 1/72 and 1/48 scale sky codes (actually have - recommended). Included are red, black, white, sky...um...I think that's it. They also do serial size codes.
