Landed Safely In Crippled Plane
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 16.
A R.N.Z.A.F. pilot, Flight Lieutenant N. J. Wood, of Hamilton, who is at present flying Bristol Freighters with No. 41 Squadron in Singapore, has been given an award after an incident in an aircraft he was flying over Malaysian Borneo earlier this year.
Far East Air Force headquarters awarded a "green endorsement" for his log book which outlines the circumstances of the incident. His aircraft was on its way to Labuan from Singapore when a loud bang was heard from one engine, all power of this engine was lost and the propeller began to speed. The nearest airfield was a 3600 ft grass strip at Bintulu in Sarawak, 20 minutes' flying time distant.
Passengers and crew were prepared for ditching and Flight Lieutenant Wood flew to the strip. Flight Lieutenant Wood was faced with the prospect of landing with a tail wind or flying over high terrain to land normally into the wind. Because of the difficulty in maintained height he decided to land with the tail wind. It was considered that his safe landing was the direct result of a high degree of calculated profession skill and airmanship, without which a serious accident would almost I certainly have occurred.
