What is the protocol for re-issuing the same rego to an aircraft again? Example Mosquito ZK-BCV. Does it just stay as ZK-BCV or is it now known as ZK-BCV (small)2 ?

What is the protocol for re-issuing the same rego to an aircraft again? Example Mosquito ZK-BCV. Does it just stay as ZK-BCV or is it now known as ZK-BCV (small)2 ? The CAA just records which aircraft had the rego for what range of dates. Places like NZCivAir have a convention of adding 2, 3 etc when referring to them, see eg in nzcivair.blogspot.com/2024/05/warming-up-for-wings-and-wheels-at.html

Thanks for the reply, Errol. I understood the convention regarding different aircraft using a particular rego and it made me curious as to a re-issue of a rego to an aircraft that had worn it previously.

Just as an additional fact, some historic registrations are only re-issued on the premise that if the original aircraft holding that registration ever re-emerges, the new holder has to hand it back.
When the owner of the Ryan STM based at Omaka applied for ZK-ABC, he had to agree that if the original Simmonds Spartan was ever restored, he would return the registration. That is unlikely as the original aircraft crashed in 1933 and was scrapped in 1937.

The NCIVAIR Blog unofficially ads a subscript (small) number after the aircraft registration to differentiate between the allocations of the same registration to different airframes.
In formats like on this site when subscripts cannot be used we use a slash instead , eg ZK-BCV/2.
Example. Take the registration ZK-IDF which is now up to allocation number 8.
All 8 airframes have been Aerospatiale/Eurocopter/Airbus AS 350 Squirrels.
So if you wanted to know the previous registration of say ZK-HTW/4 I would direct you to ZK-IDF/6 which is c/n 8052.
Does that make sense ?

Obviously when the ZK-BCV registration which was current in 1953/1955 was restored to (legally) the same airframe in 2018 then it remains just ZK-BCV. If it had been passed on to another airframe then it would have become ZK-BCV/2.
