In the Pacific Corsairs book it mentions San Diego, CA., where one of the destined NZ Corsairs was stored several months until an engine part was replaced and also a few NZ destined Corsairs were 'lost' en route to San Diego. Was wondering what was there in San Diego? I had read that both Goodyear's and Chance's were shipped from NY/NJ docks, so were there scheduled stops on the West Coast as well?
Thanks! John

The more I research the Last Vought NZ Combat Corsair NZ5487, the more questions come up? Why was it and (4) others in the San Diego area? Only (1) of the (5) was actually delivered to Espiritu Santoo in February 1945 even though it appears to have been built in Stratford in the Summer of '44. A USN serial site has them as planned to be delivered in Mid-1944 to NZ (50072-50571-57444 and 50044 which became NZ5487. These (5) planned deliveries appear to have been be from USN/USMC pool aircraft in the U.S. West Coast. Was this maybe related to the March 1944 incident where the USMC mistakenly took (5) Corsairs that were to have been assigned to NZ even though those were replaced form the Marine Corsair Pool in the Islands?
Thanks John

Slip of the finger?

Yes! Thanks....So not much is known about these 'San Diego' planned allotted RNZAF Corsairs other than whats in the "Pacific Corsairs" book? . The Classic Warbirds N0. 6 does also mention the March '44 part but nothing about these later 'San Diego' (5) and that only (1) NZ5487 was delivered. Maybe it was connected to that (5) NZ Corsairs mistakenly being taken by the USMC in an early 1944 shippment and replaced from the USMC Pool?

Just to add to the picture, the "Doomsday" book (AF380) shows: 50044 (c/n 5291) as NZ5487 50054 (c/n 5301) as NZ5534 50047 does not appear.

Yes but does anyone know the rest of the story? Seems they were to be allotted to NZ from a USN/USMC pool in California. (4) crashed in the US and just (1) was shipped out from the West Coast on board an Oil Tanker 'Pan America' after spending months awaiting a new engine (NZ5487). No one seems to know the origin of this plan. One of the Corsairs that was going to NZ, crashed around San Diego in March 1944 which was about the time the Marines mistakenly diverted (5) NZ Corsairs to their use but those were later replaced with (5) 'almost' new USMC Corsairs from Bougainville, so maybe just a coincidence that both stories involved (5) Corsairs?
