Huge congratulations to WONZ Forum member and all round awesome guy Bevan Dewes for going solo this afternoon in the Goodyear FG-1D Corsair ZK-COR. Bevan has achieved this amazing goal thanks to generosity of the aeroplane's owner Mike Jones, and the excellent guidance and mentorship from Frank Parker and Keith Skilling. He made his first flight in the aircraft at 12.27pm this afternoon from Whitianga, and made a few more flights after that. All are now back safe at Ardmore. I have nicked these photos from Mike Jones's post on Facebook. I hope Mike does not mind. I love the new flying suit and the specially presented 'wings'!

Flying the Corsair was also probably the most significant step in my aviation career and that particular aeroplane has been the thing that has driven me to the and achieve what I’m doing now.
It has been my goal to fly that since my early on teens, every part of my journey so far has been with that goal in mind.
I know it’s been a bit nuts on FB but it really has been special and something that go run a while looked like it may never actually happen. It’s been amazing the positive response there has been and support I’ve had.
Massive congratulations to Ryan Southam as well so cool to see you flying the big bird too!
Huge thanks to Mike Jones for making the dream a reality, it’s a huge under taking owning and maintaining these aircraft it’s such a huge privilege to get to fly it

Bevan posted these two photos the other day. The first is him in 2010, setting a goal. And 2024, achieving the goal.

As a spectator it's comforting to see a new generation of fighter pilots coming through. We gain so much pleasure from watching these aircraft fly and there is always a feeling that each time we see one of them fly, it may be the last. As Dave said in another thread, it's an exciting time in the NZ Warbirds scene. We enjoyed your Harvard display at Warbirds over Wanaka and look forward to seeing you display the Corsair (and Harvard) in 2026!

It warms my heart to follow this rating programme. Bravo Mike and his team for getting so many new pilots on strength for this aircraft. It makes me so happy to see these gents getting their Corsair wings!

Shame we have a number of pilots, but only one aircraft. Perhaps the other restoration can benefit from the heightened awareness and gather momentum. Imagine - two Kiwi Corsairs in formation!
