Looking at the cannon ports something is telling me they used the later version. Not especially my area of expertise though, so I could be wrong

They probably used both. 486 Sqh received some of the first Tempests to reach Squadron service.

Depends which 486 kite Calum.
Both early series Vs and the later Vs were used by 486. Do you have a specific pilot or aircraft you want to model? I've got "The Wild Winds" which is the history of 486 so I can help you out there if you want with photos, serials and aircraft codes.
As an aside, 486 were actually the first squadron to be equipped with the new Tempest (although the aircraft were very quickly reassigned away from 486, there are rumours that this was due to some high-spirited behaviour by 486 - something they were fairly famous for).
Cheers,
Tim.

Not really fussed Tim. I understand the early verion kit comes with 486 decals. I'd like to by the later one though (the 4 bladed prop just looks better) plus I want the profilpack kit.
I'm open to suggestions

Actually Calum, both the early and late series have the 4 blader. Main external difference was the 20mm cannons. On the early V these protruded from the wing leading edge quite significantly. With the later Vs the cannon set ups were changed with the inboard ones completely enclosed in the wing, and the outboard protruding ever so slightly.
If it was me I'd go for a later V, they just look better. There were lots of interesting characters in 486 which you could model. Have a look at the profiles at the Hawker Tempest website, and see what you think.
It's no bother to scan some stuff either Calum as I have to do the stuff for Deere for you! Sorry I didn't get it done this weekend, was a bit of a busy one.
Tim.

What the heck, Calum - get 'em both. ;D
I look forward to seeing it when you've finished it.
The Hurricane kit sounds great too, although I'd probably make a Finnish one, just to be different.
