This thread follows on from the Warbirds Over Wanaka 2024 thread here
A great week for the Royal New Zealand Air Force with the arrival of the first of five brand new C-130J Super Hercules aircraft. The aircraft replace the mighty Hercules C-130H aircraft which have served with our air force for 60 years.
Warbirds Over Wanaka was chuffed to host the final airshow display by the old Hercules aircraft - the sight of two Hercs roaring over the crowd in formation with the 757 was something very special.
Looking forward to having the brand new Hercs join us at Easter 2026.
Yak 3 ‘Full Noise’ was a notable absentee at this year’s Warbirds Over Wanaka. Unfortunately a precautionary aborted take off in May 2023 resulted in a runway over-run and substantial damage. Owner and pilot Graeme Frew picks up the story:
"Luckily the best place on the planet to effect repairs to a Yak fighter is Jay McIntyre’s JEM Aviation at my home airfield at Omaka, a short truck ride from the scene of the accident. Jay currently has four V-12 Yak Fighters under restoration.
As you can imagine fence posts are relatively unforgiving on aluminium wings so much of the repair work has centred around the wing. New wing spars have been fabricated and spliced into place, new wingtips installed and all the leading edge skin damage replaced with new material. A notable repair has been the right undercarriage oleo which was manufactured by Classic Aero Machining right here at Omaka, truly a great resource to have available.
The engine was badly damaged so I took the decision to buy a replacement from Vintage V-12s. This is in the process of final overhaul and is destined to arrive in NZ at the end of October along with a set of new old stock propellor blades. Of course the engine is a later model with higher horsepower!!!
We are planning on bringing all the pieces in this puzzle together, including a refreshed paint scheme,-toward the end of the year with a view to being available for rides in summer. Full Noise will be back better than ever and the plan is to be on the flightline at Wanaka in 2026."
